Gennaro Corbi, a great minimalist painter, describes what he thinks of his art in a text that in some places excites and moves. “A dear friend once dubbed me a "peddler in front of a wall"; today, after many years, I realize I've replaced that wall with a system of mirrors through which I have the illusion of peering into myself. In my works, there are no human figures; there is only myself observing what I have seen, not what I see every day. "
"The things I've seen leave traces, meanings, thoughts within me that help me understand that part of myself I'll never fully know. I make use of what, absorbed by my consciousness, becomes my story, my life of which I am merely the director."
"The lights are never direct but only reflected by the mirror of my memory/consciousness. The images are blurred, informal because they do not adhere to the geometries of optics; they are sketchy and disrespectful of Cartesian space, which I view very critically, referenced by bands, fields traced to create spaces seemingly uninhabited except by one's own thoughts. Mine is a simple diary of my eighty years preserved, often indistinctly at the bottom of a drawer accessible only by sensations; I am convinced that everyone has a diary hidden within their soul; I merely attempt, through my works, to provide a pretext for accessing what each person carries within themselves, often unconsciously. I do not paint for others' eyes but for their intangible emotion as spectators of their own existence. Stories certainly different from mine but with the infinite richness of lives nevertheless lived that demand respect every day. In front of my paintings, close your eyes and think of yourselves, look within and you will find, the only true wealth that is your story; only then will my sending out my works make sense; if this does not happen, it means they have no value to others, and then they have only served me.”
